First Consultation? What to Expect and How to Prepare
By Kim Professional Haircolorist | October 26, 2026
Serving Vienna, Tysons Corner, Falls Church, McLean, Oakton, and Merrifield
I hear it all the time: you’re excited about changing your hair, but you’re nervous about the first consultation. That’s normal. A lot of my regulars started young and stuck with me for years because they felt taken care of right away, including one who’s been coming to me since she was 10 because I “always does me right!!” Your first consultation is a short, straightforward meeting, usually 15 to 30 minutes, where I learn what you want, look at your hair in real life, and map out a plan you can actually keep up with.
Quick reassurance: If you’ve had stylists “do whatever they wanted” in the past, I get it. My consultation is built around listening first, then recommending what fits your hair texture, thickness, and schedule.
My 10-minute prep checklist for a time-smart consultation in Vienna
If you work around Tysons or commute toward DC, you probably don’t want to spend your whole evening talking about hair. A little prep makes the consultation faster and more accurate, especially if you’re thinking balayage, highlights, ombre hair color, gray blending, or a big shift like going lighter.
Bring these 4 things
- 2 to 4 photos of what you like. One “dream hair” photo is fine, but I really want to see a couple options so I can spot the pattern.
- Your hair history timeline for the last 12 to 24 months: color, toner, box dye, perms, keratin treatment, relaxers, anything like that.
- A quick product list, especially if you use purple shampoo, heavy masks, oils, or anything labeled “bonding.”
- Allergies and sensitivities. Let me know if your scalp reacts easily or if fragrance is an issue.
And show up with your top 2 questions written down. People tell me they love that I’m efficient and professional, but I still make room for the details that matter, like how your color needs to grow out and what you can maintain between visits.
What actually happens in a 15 to 30 minute first consultation (step-by-step)
When you arrive at my hair salon in the Westwood Center and Tysons Corner area, I’ll start by asking what you want to see when you look in the mirror. More brightness around your face? A “perfect blonde” that still looks expensive as it grows out? Gray blended softly? Or maybe you want vivid color, like the client who told me her vibrant purple always turns out so good.
Then I’ll look at your hair up close. I pay attention to texture, thickness, porosity, and how your hair behaves. A lot of people come in after feeling ignored somewhere else. I take the time to listen and I’m honest about what fits your hair and your upkeep comfort level.
Here’s what I’ll cover with you: your goal photos, your hair history, what service makes the most sense (balayage, highlights, all-over color, gray blending, toner), how long it typically takes, and what the price range looks like so you’re not guessing.
If you’re also thinking about haircut changes, I’ll talk through shape and maintenance. People with thicker hair tell me they like how I cut and texture it correctly. I also get a lot of requests for long layers that keep a wavy, fluffy flow, the kind that moves instead of sitting heavy.
And yes, I’ll tell you what I would do first and why. One client summed it up perfectly: “The consultation was thorough, and Kim provided expert advice on what would suit my hair texture and thickness.”
“I was looking to switch salon because I got tired of other stylist doing whatever they wanted to my hair, but Kim took the time to listen to my needs.”

After your consultation: next steps for balayage, highlights, or color plans that last
After we talk it through, you’ll leave with a clear plan. If we’re moving forward with color, I’ll recommend timing and the right service order. That matters when you’re combining things, like a color service plus a haircut, or planning keratin for smoother styling.
What I generally recommend right after we plan color
- Hold off on heavy oils right before your color appointment. In October, the air gets drier in Northern Virginia, so go for light hydration instead of coating the hair.
- If you’re chasing a specific tone, bring the photos back to your color appointment too. Lighting changes everything.
- Plan your maintenance realistically. Many people love balayage and dimensional highlights because the grow-out is softer when it’s done right.
A lot of guests tell me they start getting compliments after their cut and color, including gray blends that look “exactly what I had asked for, ” and brighter blondes that still blend nicely as the hair grows out.
My “ask me this first” tips that calm first-timers fast
If you want a smooth first-time consultation, here’s what I want you to ask me. It keeps everything clear and it protects your time.
Ask: “What’s the plan for grow-out?” If you’re doing balayage, ombre hair color, or highlights, this question matters as much as the day-one result. People come back to me for years because they like that I plan the look so it stays flattering between visits.
If you’re shopping in Tysons or heading to a Wolf Trap show and you need a quick pre-event refresh later on, a good consultation sets you up for that too. I also try to keep scheduling realistic for commuters, with late-afternoon and weekend consultation slots when possible.
If you’re ready, start with a consultation and bring your photos and hair history. I’ll listen closely, give you honest options, and we’ll pick a plan that matches your hair and your life. And if you’re dealing with breakage or color stress, you may also want to read my guide on color damage and the consultation before we meet.
FAQ: first consultation questions I get all the time
What happens during a Consultation?
A consultation is a short meeting, usually 15 to 30 minutes, where I review your goals, your hair history and any concerns, then recommend a plan. We’ll talk through the services that fit, like balayage, highlights, all-over color, gray blending, or haircut shape. I’ll also go over timing and price so you know what you’re signing up for before we start.
How long does a Consultation usually take?
Most consultations take about 15 to 30 minutes. If you have a long history of color, box dye, perms, keratin, or you’re planning a big change, I may use the full window so I can give you an accurate plan.
Do I need a Consultation before my first service?
For hair color services, yes, I recommend it. It gives us a chance to get clear on your goal, decide on the best color services for you, and set expectations around timing and price before your appointment.
Is there a fee for a Consultation?
Fees can vary depending on what we’re planning and how much time we need. When you reach out to book, I’ll tell you up front if there’s a consultation fee and how it applies.
What should I bring to my first Consultation?
Bring a few clear inspiration photos, a quick list of products you use often, and your chemical history for the last year or two, including any color, toner, perms, keratin treatment, or box dye. If you have allergies or scalp sensitivities, let me know at the start so I can plan safely and comfortably.
Need help deciding what to book? If you’re in Vienna, McLean, Oakton, Falls Church, Merrifield, or Tysons Corner and you want a clear plan for balayage, highlights, a blowout, haircut shape, hair extensions planning, or a future keratin appointment, start with a consultation. Share your photos and your hair history, and I’ll guide you to the right next step.
